Map Search Overview
Return to Index | Return to Top

The map search provides a visual way to search for the information you want.  You can zoom in on a specific area to examine its geographic attributes, like its position relative to major highways, harbours, and other transportation routes.  The interactive map can display elevation contours, climate, agricultural lands, tourism regions, and many other backdrops along with legends for easy interpretation.

Using a radius or corridor search, you can get information about an area's population, leading employers, government, and other themes.

Here is an overview of the map and its controls.

Clicking these buttons activates the corresponding tool and displays instruction underneath.

Zoom In

When this tool is active, a click on the map will allow you to zoom in, centered on the spot where you click.

You can also create a "zoom box".  Place your cursor at the top left corner of the box you want to create.  Now click and hold down the mouse button, then move the cursor down and to the right (you should see a red box resize with the cursor movement).  When you have created a box that covers the area you wish to enlarge, release the mouse button.  The map will then zoom to the bounds of the box.

Zoom Out

When this tool is active, the map zooms out to show a larger area, centered on the spot where you click.

Pan

When this tool is active, a click on the map moves the view of the map left, right, up, and down.  It recenters the map on the spot where you click.

Go To...

If you know the place you want to see, but don't know where it is,you can use 'Go To...' to pick a community from a list and the map will take you there.  Clicking this button opens a popup window with a list of major placenames.  Selecting a placename and clicking 'OK' will center the map view over that place.  If the place you're looking for is not there, select 'More Places...' at the bottom of the list and a much larger list will load.

Radius Search
Return to Index | Return to Top

The Radius Search enables you to click a point and retrieve data within a radius from that point in any direction.

Theme

The first drop-down list allows you to select the different themes you can search.

Radius

The second drop-down list sets the search radius.

Example: A radius of 5 miles will search 5 miles in every direction from the point you click on the map.

Once you have selected your search criteria, click on the map where you want the center of the search radius to be.  The results will be shown under the map view, and a circle will be drawn on the map representing the extent of the search area.

Corridor Search
Return to Index | Return to Top

The corridor search enables you to retrieve data from predetermined highway routes between two communities.

Theme

The first drop-down list allows you to select the different themes you can search.

Width

The second drop-down list sets the width of the corridor.

Community One

The third drop-down list sets the starting point of the corridor.

Community Two

The fourth drop-down list sets the ending point of the corridor.

Once you have selected your search criteria, click 'Search'.  The results will be shown under the map view, and a corridor will be drawn on the map representing the extent of the search area.

Backdrop Control
Return to Index | Return to Top

This control allows you to choose the map's background image from a list of "visual" themes.

Set the backdrop of the map by selecting from the drop-down list.  The map will update automatically, displaying the selected backdrop.
